I Quilt Pink for the Cure

Today was our high school's quilt show (isn't that cool! I've never heard of a school that had a quilting class before). This year's theme was Quilt Pink for the Cure. The students all proudly displayed their quilts, and a class quilt done in white, black, and pink is being raffled off. All proceeds are going to breast cancer research.

I've talked (numerous times) about the patterns at You Can Make This!, and I received special permission to create a She Loves Me Knot handbag to donate to the silent auction at the quilt show.

I thought it appropriate that the handbag should be in the same colors, as well as having some pink ribbon fabric incorporated. Let's hope it does well in the auction!

I'm not sure what Daddy will have to say about the pink beads, but I guess the munchkin is secure enough in his manliness to carry it off!

New email

Yahoo was just getting too full of junk, so from now on I'm moving over to gmail. The new address is posted to the right, on my sidebar. The old yahoo address still exists, but I'm trying to organize my blog/etsy/sewing stuff under on email client, and leaving the "junk" behind. Just another way of letting you, faithful readers, know that I've got your back.

Barred Owl of the woodshouse

This has been a long winter for most parts of the United States. I haven't lived in Kansas long, but many of the folks who've grown up here have commented on how tough it's been. Three ice storms, one that knocked out our power for a week, and a lot of snow and cold temperatures had us pining for spring.

But some have had it worse...

My mom sent this photo from "the woodshouse", her beautiful home in Northern Wisconsin. Apparently, the abundant snowcover this winter was preventing the owls from feeding, and many were dying of starvation. Word went out to put out food if these barred owls were seen in your area, but this one didn't get to that point. She told me how soft the feathers were, and how light it felt.

Floored

In another update on the previous post, I sent another email to said company, thanking them for taking the time to respond to all of our concerns.

I received a personal response from the owner, literally minutes after my email, assuring me that they are doing all they can to remedy the situation, and to get out all the information they can.

This is the kind of responsibility our society is so sorely lacking. But sometimes rays of hope shine through.

***UPDATE 4/7/08*** It has been brought to my attention that the "personal" email I received from Alimrose was deceiving, and there are still products out there for sale, with her name on them. Thank you to Floresita and Moving Hands for a little more info on the subject. There was also a similar situation with a lovely, crafty girl interviewed on Martha Stewart, showed a tutorial on making beautiful dolls, gave out the pattern for free (but with copyright protection), only to find them being sold on another etsy site. Please visit these fine, crafty folks who are trying to help make the crafty internet a safer place.

Just when I thought the week couldn't get any worse...

...actually, the week would have been fine except for the emergency room incident Monday night (munchkin stuck a piece of foam up his nose, and it took five of us to hold him down) which came right in the middle of grilling out. Then the weather has been nasty. And now this...

Complete and utter plagiarism.

I find it so hard to believe that a seemingly child-friendly retailer could steal so blatantly from one of our blog sisters, Wee Wonderfuls.

What is the world coming to?

I sent a "shame on you" email to the company's website. If you'd like to do the same, here is the web address.

***UPDATE*** I just received a reply from the company, with a full apology to anyone concerned, stating that they have been in contact with Hillary Lang (owner of Wee Wonderfuls), that they had no intention of stealing from anyone (apparently a very unfortunate mistake on the part of a supplier), and have recalled all such products and have made a personal apology to Hillary herself. I give them kudos for prompt response, plus taking the right track. It's unfortunate that not all out there are as conscientious.

So I guess the week ended pretty well after all.

AARP update

Cue the tickertape noises...this just in...

People under 50 can join the AARP. No, seriously. When I called to get them off my back, the lady told me that anyone under 50 and over 18 can join, but they are only "associate members" without full privileges. Apparently, this means you can pay the same membership fee as everyone else, but aren't really eligible for any benefits. Until you turn 50.

No thanks.

But I appreciate the offer. I think.
